Signing Day Spotlight: Dominic Thieman

The letter is in for Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas WR Dominic Thieman. Here's a closer look at the new Illinois signee.

Commitment Date: 6/20/2015

Twitter Handle: @_DT4_

Why Illinois?

"I've been asked this a thousand times by my teammates. For me the decision was easy, everything i could ever need AND want is there. The academic excellence is first class and I have the opportunity to play in the B1G. I love the culture around the Illinois locker room especially. The guys treat you like family the minute they hear you're a commit to the Illini and the coaches hold the same morals my parents do. So for me this was a great fit all-around academically, football wise, and the surrounding support cast is phenomenal, both coaches and academic advisors. GO ILLINI!"

Evaluation:

Thieman may not be the athletic freak that some of his St. Thomas Aquinas teammates are, but that didn't keep him from leading his team in receiving yards this past season.  Thieman runs great routes to give himself opportunities to make plays and has good hands, even in traffic.

His long arms and big strides help him catch hard-to-get passes and allow him to stretch the field despite lacking elite top-end speed.  Thieman likely ends up as a backup to Justin Hardee and Malik Turner as a freshman, but if he starts to exhibit similar productivity at Illinois as he did at Aquinas, it may be difficult to keep him off the field.
