Illini basketball coach Groce, AD Josh Whitman to hold joint press conference 3 p.m. today

Reason for press conference not specified but spokesman says it will be 'an overall address'

CHAMPAIGN - Illinois basketball coach John Groce and athletics director Josh Whitman will hold a joint press conference at 3 p.m. Thursday in the press box at Memorial Stadium.

Illinois did not specify a reason for the press conference.

Groce and Whitman likely will address the recent string of criminal allegations against the basketball program. A team spokesman told Illini Inquirer that the press conference is "an overall address" but that Groce and Whitman will not be able to address specific allegations due to the legal process.

Last week, junior guards Jaylon Tate and Kendrick Nunn both were arrested for charges of domestic battery. Both plead not guilty and await separate April 20 pre-trial hearings.

Last month, sophomore Leron Black was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated assault for which he plead not guilty. He allegedly threatened an Urbana nightclub bouncer with a knife. He has a pretrial hearing set for April 19.

Whitman and Groce released joint statements following the previous two arrests. Here was the latest following Nunn's arrest.

“Kendrick Nunn has been suspended indefinitely from all team-related activities pending legal proceedings and an investigation into allegations of domestic battery," the statement read. "Once again, we encourage everyone to allow the legal process to work before passing judgment. We are striving for a championship culture across our entire athletics program. Obviously, yesterday’s event is the latest in a series of conduct issues involving our men’s basketball team. We are working diligently to ensure that our men’s basketball team is representative of the high ideals that we uphold in Illinois Athletics.”
