REPORT: Lovie Smith tabs Josh Sternquist as Illini director of player personnel

Illinois native Josh Sternquist leaves New Mexico to head Illini recruiting efforts

CHAMPAIGN - Belvidere, Ill. native Josh Sternquist will lead Illinois football coach Lovie Smith's recruiting efforts.

According to a report from the Albuquerque Journal, Sternquist -- who spent the last four seasons as New Mexico's director of football recruiting -- has been tabbed as the Illini's director of player personnel.

Sternquist has previous Big Ten experience, serving as the assistant recruiting coordinator at Minnesota from 2008-12 and as football and recruiting operations assistant at Wisconsin from 2004-08. He played football at Wisconsin-Whitewater and graduated in 2004.

While only the 10 coaches can recruit off campus, Sternquist will lead the organization of all Illinois football recruiting efforts. He will lead the recruiting scheduling and planning and work with the compliance office and admissions office. Previously at Illinois, these duties have been left to an assistant. But with burgeoning college football staffing budgets, many power-five programs are creating more player personnel departments.
