CHAMPAIGN - Before hitting the recruiting trail on Wednesday, Illinois hosted several prospects  on Tuesday.

Two Alabama prospects flew into Illinois for an unofficial visit during the day.

The Illini staff will finally hit the road recruiting -- visiting high schools and prospects' homes -- starting Wednesday. Smith was hired in early March in the middle of a quiet period, where coaches cannot make contact with recruits off campus.

The evaluation period, where coaches can recruit off campus, started April 15, but the Illini staff needed to finish up a condensed spring practice schedule (which started April 1) before focusing on recruiting. The evaluation period extends through May 31.
