Sacramento (CA) Inkerdum safety Trajon Cotton was very excited when he got an offer from Illinois Monday night. The 2017 defensive target already holds offers from several other Big Ten and Pac 12 programs, but jelled quickly with the Illini coaches.
"Coach called me Sunday and asked me a couple of questions then offered me Monday," Cotton said. "It was Coach Nickerson. I'm connecting really well with him so far. I know they're building something special (at Illinois)."
Cotton still has much to learn about Illinois, but his initial impressions of the program show that he's buying into the hype that the program has generated the last few months.
Cotton is still working through the recruiting process and hasn't narrowed anything down yet, but does know what is going to be important for him in looking at schools in the coming months.
"I want to go to a place where I'm wanted and needed," Cotton said. "A place where I feel like I'm at home, a place with a great education where I can also play. I like a pro-style defense but just put me on the field and I'm ready to play."
Illinois is far from California, but Cotton doesn't see the distance as a big issue for the Illini or for any other school, really.
"Distance doesn't really matter to me because I'm trying to experience life and don't feel like I have to be tied down to home."
