Creighton guard Drew Cayce to walk on at Illinois

Creighton walk-on guard leaving Blue Jays after redshirt season

The La Lumiere (Ind.) Prep to Illinois pipeline will continue. Former Creighton guard and La Lumiere player Drew Cayce will transfer to Illinois, he announced on Twitter on Thursday.

Cayce did not play his freshman season at Creighton, where he also was a walk-on. Cayce played 13 minutes over three games during the team's Italian trip, totaling three rebounds and an assist.

Cayce played two seasons at La Lumiere Prep alongside Illini sophomore Jalen Coleman-Lands. He averaged 9.8 points and 2.8 assists as a senior captain for La Lu.

Illinois earned a commitment from La Lumiere rising senior Jeremiah Tilmon earlier this month. "They've taken the time to build genuine relationships in particular probably more Jamall Walker than anybody and Coach Groce," La Lu coach Shane Heirman told Illini Inquirer this month. "I think this society and this world we live in is kind of this instant gratification, instant success people are always searching for. It's not an overnight process to build these successful, sustainable relationships in this industry. It takes time. It takes time to build that trust. They've done an incredible job of being persistent and making sure we know we can trust them, and they're going to take care of our guys. They've done a great job. They work their tails off and credit to them. I think the program's probably in the best state it's been in under Coach Groce. I think it's kind of primed to take off too."
