Illinois sent an official scholarship offer to Calvin Tyler a week ago. He just didn't know it yet because he hadn't checked the mailbox.
"It was sent to me August 1st," Tyler said. "I just never saw it. I was like, 'What the heck!'"
The offer was sent to Tyler, the No. 68 running back in the country, days after he wrapped up an unofficial visit to Illinois. Illinois recently has turned up its interest for the three-star Texas tailback. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound shifty, speedy back visited campus on June 27 and June 28.
The Illini told Tyler an offer likely would come in a few days or weeks. They followed through.

Tyler said he plans to visit California on Sept. 17 and plans a follow-up official visit to Illinois.
After his visit to Illinois last month, Tyler said: "Once they offer, it'll be crazy for a lot of other schools, because I love Illinois, man. If I had a top-five, they'd be like at the top. They'd be at the top."
After receiving the Illini offer, Tyler admits that it's currently a two-team race for him between Illinois and the other power-five scholarship offer he's received
"I will put it like this, Illinois and Cal are at the top," Tyler said. "But I will tell you who is at the top once I visit Cal."
