Illinois defensive line coach Mike Phair has scoured his home state of Arizona searching for impact defensive ends, extending scholarship offers to several Grand Canyon State prospects including Jalen Harris and Odua Isibor.
Add another to the list.
Illinois extended a scholarship offer to Yuma Catholic defensive end Daniel Callendar on Wednesday night.
"Coach (Mike) Phair called me, sir," Callendar told Illini Inquirer. "They said that I'm a good fit for their program and I'll make the most of my ability there. With their great coaching staff, they can push me to my true potential. My reaction was just being blessed and happy to have an offer from another school. I'm a very happy person."
Illinois is the first power-five program to extend a scholarship offer to Callendar, who also has a scholarship offer from South Dakota State. Callendar said both schools are on the "same" level for him now.
But Illinois obviously has turned up the heat.
"What I like about the coaching staff is that they see my strengths and they want to utilize me off what I do best: pass rush," Callendar said. "The amount of interest I've received from the school plays a big part as well. I'll be visiting the school, but no specific date yet."
