Clock ticking down for Jeremiah Tilmon in the early signing period

Will five-star center Jeremiah Tilmon sign with the Illini on Wednesday?

The time left in the early signing period is ticking down and the big question remains in Champaign: Will five-star Illini commit Jeremiah Tilmon put his name on the dotted line before the clock strikes midnight on Thursday?

Illini head coach John Groce and assistant Jamall Walker went down to East St. Louis on Saturday morning to visit Tilmon and family, but his status has remained unchanged. He is committed but him playing with the Illini next season is not a done deal until he faxes in his letter of intent.

If he doesn't submit it after Wednesday has concluded, he can't sign until April. For obvious reasons, Illinois would like to officially lock up the crown jewel in their 2017 class ASAP -- a player who has been committed since July.

Tilmon's mom, April, released a statement to on Saturday.

"Just because Jeremiah hasn't signed in the early period doesn't mean he's not committed to Illinois," she said. "Jeremiah has a lot of things going on behind the scenes that take precedence over signing and we do apologize for the commotion."

So what happens next? Tilmon's mother told on Tuesday that there will be a family meeting on Tuesday night to discuss the situation and try to come to a conclusion. Is there still a chance he signs on Wednesday?

"Yes, absolutely," April Tilmon said on Tuesday.
