Illinois has been chasing Carney for a long time, and for good reason. Carney has a knack for getting into the backfield and causing chaos as he blows up plays. Especially with a full spring in the strength and conditioning program and spring practices, Carney is likely to get starter reps very early in his career, possibly right from the get-go.
Tale of the Tape:
One of the first things on Carney's tape that stands out is his ability to get penetration by both an edge rush and by effective shooting of gaps in the offensive line. His quick first step allows him to gain the advantage on the offensive players and force them to play on their heels.
Carney does a great job of disengaging blockers using good hand-fighting technique. He has a tendency at times to get a little too high in his stance too quickly, but so far he has been able to overcome that using his quickness. He consistently finds success faking the outside rush and breaking back to the inside, leaving offensive linemen behind.
How He Fits:
Carney enrolling early is huge for both he and the Illinois defense. Illinois has been selling him on being an immediate impact at defensive end, and closed the deal by getting him to enroll early, which is something Carney prioritized in his college selection process.
On tape, Carney shows everal of the same characteristics as elite defensive end Dawuane Smoot. He is built like Smoot in a lot of ways physically when he came out of high school. Likewise, Carney shows shades of the same quickness of Smoot and ability to shed defenders.
the Illini have already added a great future strongside defensive end in Huntley product Olalere Oladipo. Now they have a quality pass rusher to pair with him in Carney. The staff still hopes to add a couple more talents at the position, possibly even from the JUCO ranks. Depth at the end position is pretty barren, but getting Carney on campus for this spring is a huge victory for this staff. And it's a testament to their ability to grind out and win a tough recruitment.
