Hueytown (Ala.) defensive end Jamal Woods signed with illinois on Wednesday. The two-star defensive end previously was committed to Memphis.
Woods chose the Illini over Georgia Tech, Memphis, Kansas and Louisiana-Lafayette, among others.
"Their football program is power-five, Big Ten," Woods told Illini Inquirer earlier this month. "The coaching staff is good, and they have a wonderful head coach. That's the best coach out there to me, for real.
"They say I'm one of their top defensive ends that they've seen," Woods said. "They think I'm a good pass rusher, and they believe that if I come down there that I can be a starter as a true freshman."
Woods, who could play defensive tackle as well, joins the Illini defensive line makeover following the losses of five seniors: Dawuane Smoot, Carroll Phillips, Gimel President, Chunky Clements and Rob Bain.
Woods is the 24th commitment in the Illini Class of 2017.
