It's already been a productive offseason for Chicago (IL) De La Salle 2018 linebacker Joseph Bonds. After a 5-0 start to his junior season, De La Salle finished 0-5 over the last half of the season. That finish has motivated Bonds to work harder to have a strong senior season.
"Everything is going great!" Bonds said. "Offseason training is good and the recruiting is blowing up."
Bonds has already received a number of offers, including several from the Mid-American Conference. But he's hopeful to grow that list over the course of the spring and summer.
"Right now I have offers from Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Iowa State, Toledo, Miami of Ohio, and Ball State," he said.
Illinois is one school that has been showing a lot of interest in the Chicago linebacker. He's hopeful that an offer comes from the in-state program sometime in the next few months.
"Illinois has been talking to me a lot!," Bonds said. "I believe Illinois could offer and I really hope so! Would be awesome to have an opportunity to stay in state."
With his number of options increasing for college destinations, Bonds talked about what would end up mattering when separating schools.
"I'm looking for a great environment and great coach," Bonds said. "I want to at least be able to play a little my freshman year and start my sophomore year. I also look to see about academics."
Bonds has caught the eye of several programs, but still feels that some of his abilities are frequently overlooked, especially his versatility.
"I'm more athletic and versatile than most of the guys at my position," Bonds said. "I also can get from sideline to sideline very fast and I can close in good and blitz and cover good. I can fit into lots of different defenses because of the many different things I can do."
Bonds told Illini Inquirer that he hopes to visit Illinois this spring. He will definitely be one prospect to keep an eye on.
