Illini first power-five to offer Tennessee OL Briason Mays

Illini first power-five program to extend scholarship offer to Tennessee offensive lineman Briason Mays

Illinois offered Tennessee quarterback Woodrow "Trey" Lowe III on Thursday. One of his protectors didn't have to wait long to receive the same opportunity.

The Illini extended a scholarship offer the same day to Bolivar (Tenn.) Central offensive lineman Briason Mays.

"It was cool," Mays said. "I'm very glad that they pulled the trigger on me, and I'm happy for Trey as well."

Mays received the offer, his first power-five offer, during a Thursday campus visit with Lowe.

"We toured the campus and after that we talked with the coaches and after that they offered me," Lowe said. "It was exciting. It's a good school academically and the coaching staff was great. It was my first power-five. It's a great feeling when anyone offers me. That someone has confidence in me like that is always special.

"The visit was great. The campus was nice and well kept. I got a chance to talk to about every coach and they were all good guys. The size of the actual campus stood out to me."

Mays also holds offers from Marshall, Middle Tennessee and Tennessee-Martin. He said he doesn't have any other visits currently scheduled.

What's Mays looking for in a program?

"Strong academics, a good coaching staff, and a great tradition," Mays said.
