Mr. Basketball winner Mark Smith will announce his college decision on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT at Edwardsville High School -- a source confirmed to IlliniInquirer.com.
Smith took an unofficial visit to Illinois last Thursday. He followed that up by taking his final official visit to Ohio State over the weekend. Smith had Duke and Michigan State for in-home visits early last week as well.
The last Illinois Mr. Basketball to go to the home-state school was Jereme Richmond in 2010. Just more than a month into his tenure, Illini head coach Brad Underwood is looking to change that.
"Keeping players at home is a vital part of any program's success," Underwood said at his introductory press conference.
The addition of Smith would be one heck of a place to start. The 6-foot-5 senior averaged 21.9 points, 8.4 assists and 8.2 rebounds per game this past season.
He is ready-made for the next level with his athleticism, build and overall game. Illinois is looking to put the ball in his hands right away.
Now, all eyes shift towards Edwardsville to see if this will be the first big win of the Underwood era.
