Donnie Abraham was hired in part to help Illinois strengthen their ties in Florida. On Thursday, the first-year Illinois safeties coach extended a scholarship offer to LeHigh (Fla.) Acres defensive back Jartavius Martin.
"Around noon, I had got a call from my head coach saying that he had just talked to coach Donnie Abraham from Illinois," Martin told Illini Inquirer. "He told me they had offered me and all I could do was smile. Then after that I had received a text from Coach Abraham saying they had offered me."
The Illinois offer is the first power-five offer for Martin, a 6-foot, 170-pound safety prospect.
"It really means a lot because its my first Big Ten offer, and I really like what they have going as a team," Martin said. "I think Coach Abraham is an awesome coach and really knows his stuff. They just love the way I'm able to locate the ball in the air and come down and make plays."
Martin also has offers from Air Force, Southern Miss, Tulane, Charlotte, Georgia Southern and New Hampshire.
"I have quite a few schools who are sticking out in recruiting," Martin said. "I have not yet set up any visits but plan on setting some up pretty soon."
