2019 St. Louis WR Maurice Massey shines at Illinois Fighting Illini camp

Lanky 2019 St. Louis area wideout Maurice Massey discusses his handful of scholarship offers and his experience at the Illinois camp

Maurice Massey is known for his length and athleticism. But the 6-foot-3 Class of 2019 St. Charles (Mo.) Francis Howell North wideout also displayed the quickness and precision during Friday's Illinois camp at Lindenwood University that make him such a sought-after prospect.

During a one-on-one drill, he nearly shook a defensive back out of his shoes.

"I've been working a lot on my double moves," Massey said. "I love to break some ankles and get those 'ooohs,' and 'aaahs.'"

Massey is one of the headliners in another talented class of 2019 in St. Louis, and he was one of the no-doubt standouts of Friday's camp. Massey already holds an Illinois offer and is one of the Illini's priorities in the Class of 2019.

"I came here because they offered me, and I like Illinois. I wanted to make some progress (with that relationship)," Massey said. "I finally got to meet the whole entire staff. I would say it furthered the progress. If I wanted to go there, I now see the environment they provide. It's an actual thing to see everybody in person. It was cool."

Illinois offensive coordinator Garrick McGee, one of the lead recruiters for Massey, chatted up the wideout during the camp, and wide receivers coach Andrew Hayes-Stoker led him through drills.

"He was helping me by telling me to get off faster in my breaks. He knows. He's been there. It's better to get one-on-one teaching face to face. They're family. Like Coach (Lovie Smith) said, they're all together, and I feel like it would be a good fit."

Massey said he was a bit taken aback when Illinois offered.

"I'm not going to lie, I was happy," Massey said. "But I've never gotten a chance to see them and talk to them. So when I got that offer, it was like, 'Boom!'"

Iowa State, Iowa, Boston College and Bowling Green also have offered.

"Iowa's also cool," Massey said. "I'm not going to say I have a favorite. I like all of them or a particular thing right now. I like all of them."

But with Notre Dame, Nebraska, Penn State and Ohio State also showing interest, Massey's recruitment likely will only get more competitive.

"It's exciting, but you also have to stay humble," Massey said. "Everybody's going to get it, so you still got to work so there are more to come."

What's Massey looking for in a school?

"Family atmosphere," Massey said. "The coaches have to actually stay together."
