CHAMPAIGN - Illinois confirmed to Illini Inquirer that two second-year players are transferring out of the program.
Both prospects signed in February 2016 with Illinois coach Bill Cubit, who had signed a two-year contract with interim leadership. Just a month later, new Illinois athletics director Josh Whitman fired Cubit and hired Lovie Smith.
Nation played in the Illini's first three games last season, running for 59 yards on 11 carries, but he did not play in the final eight games.
McGriff told Illini Inquirer he has transferred to Akron. The 5-foot-9 receiver missed the entire season with an injury suffered during fall training camp.
"Illinois just wasn't working out," McGriff told Illini Inquirer. "Akron was one of the schools that were on me hard when I was being recruited ,and I trusted them back then due to our relationship. I just felt it was right."
The Illini Inquirer Eligibility page now counts Illinois with 75 scholarship players (of 85) on the roster. The team returns just eight seniors, 13 juniors and 20 sophomores. The team currently is slated to have 34 scholarship players who are redshirt freshmen or true freshmen.
