University of Illinois sophomore All-American wrestler Alex Tirapelle was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Friday, garnering the honor for the second time this season.

Tirapelle defeated two-time U.S. World Team member and former Iowa State NCAA Champion Chris Bono, who was the tournament's No. 1-seed, to log his first Midlands Tournament title in the 157-pound weight class. Tirapelle kept his 2003-04 undefeated record alive with an exciting 2-1 double-overtime win against the three-time All-American, which was the clinching match for Illinois' first-ever Midlands team title. Illinois led Iowa State by 1.5 points prior to the 157-pound match, but Tirapelle's win gave the Illini additional points, putting them out of reach of the Cyclones. The Illini were ranked seventh heading into the tournament, upsetting No. 2 Iowa State and No. 4 Iowa in the process.
