Wisconsin controlled most of the game on both sides of the court, but at halftime Illinois was still in the game. In the second half Illinois pulled the game as close as 44-40, but then Wisconsin went on 15-2 run that included four points due to a Nick Smith technical foul. Smith was called for traveling while he made a post move, and instead of letting the ball sit there he tapped it into the crowd, which drew a technical and also sucked the air out of the Illinois attack.
Illinois was never able to get the ball inside to James Augustine with any consistency as he only scored eight points. Roger Powell was Illinois' only offensive threat as he scored 24 points from both the inside and the outside.
