Minnesota started out the game shooting 69% and took a 22-7 lead on the Fighting Illini with 15:20 left in the first half. After that basket, Illinois started to tighten up their defense and went on a 25-8 run over the next five minutes in the first half to take a 32-30 lead over Minnesota. The Gophers pulled ahead of the Illini and headed into the half with a 44-43 lead.
The start of the second half saw five lead changes as the teams battled back and forth. The Illini finally took the lead for good on a lay-up by Roger Powell with 14:25 left in the game that made the score 55-54 Illinois. The Illini then outscored Minnesota 24-14 in the rest of the second half.
Deron Williams led the Illini recording a double double with 19 points on 7-11 shooting and 11 assists. His backcourt mate Dee Brown contributed 18 points on 7-17 shooting. Nick Smith and James Augustine were in double figures for the Illini as well scoring 13 and 10, respectively.
Kris Humphries, the Big Ten's leading scored, led the Golden Gophers with 23 points and 9 rebounds, just one rebound away from this thirteenth 20 and 10 game on the season. Stan Gaines and Aaron Robinson were also in double figures for the Gophers with 12 and 10, respectively.
