"Notre Dame and Illinois fluctuate as my #1 and #2 schools like the Miami Heat and the Detroit Pistons do in the polls," said Jones, from Morgan Park High School.
"I still want to decide on a program before the season.
"My cousin, Chris James, just committed to Illinois, and it's no surprise to me that he gave them his verbal. For a while there, we wanted to commit to a program at the same time. And you also got to look at recruiting like a lot of stuff about these programs is all going to change by the time February rolls around.
"Every time me and Chris are at Illinois we learn something new about the coaches and the players," he said. "They're all highly confident people, and the coaches run practice over there really well. Everything there is so coordinated that it makes me feel like I'm at my high school. They don't really pressure me to commit, and they're the main school that's recruiting me and my cousin hard.
"Besides the education and getting a degree from Notre Dame, they've got an awesome coaching staff going there. It proves that they can all coach well and be successful at the next level.
"I really like the fact that I'd be coached at my position by both coaches (Charlie) Weis and (David) Cuttcliffe (quarterbacks). That's a great combination of coaches to work with right there because they've been so successful in the past. I've got to say that that's the quality of Notre Dame that is drawing me to them the most.
"But I think that it would be difficult for me to live there. I'm not Catholic at all and I know that that is something that is a big part of the school. I'd have to take classes that would deal with religion like that, so I just am unsure on that part of the program.
"I really like the fans there though," added James. "They're great fans who really seem to love the school and are so enthusiastic about the program and are real down-to-earth people. The people there are real people-friendly. I've also had a chance to talk with some of the players there and they're very strict on conditioning and how they work. I really like that about them.
"I also like some of the MAC schools out there, like Toledo, Bowling Green and Miami of Ohio because they have been producing the most QBs lately," he said.
"I'm still undecided on my summer plans, but I know that I'd like to get out there and see some other programs that are interested in me and that I've got interest in. I'd really like to see Purdue, USC, Illinois and Miami of Florida if I can."
Jones has been to JR Days at both Illinois and Notre Dame. Some of his other offers are from Indiana, Penn State and Toledo.
