Illini Recruit Brian Carlwell Ignores Critics

Brian Carlwell has a plan: not to listen to others when it comes to his play on the court. Last night I spoke with Carlwell - get inside here at to here his reply.

Brian Carlwell is a 6-10 center from Proviso East High School in Illinois, and is currently ranked #31 by our service. That's up six spots since the summer started.

Carlwell is a happy camper these days. His AAU team just won a national title and that makes him happy. "That was a great way to end the summer. I'm not really tired of basketball because I love it, but it's been a long summer," Carlwell said.

When he started this summer he set a goal, and that was to get better on the offensive end of the court. "That was one of my goals because everyone always talked about my defense, but this summer I definitely got better on the offensive end of the floor."

Carlwell also stated that everything this summer was as perfect as it appeared. "A lot of guys said I was overrated and I wasn't that good. They may have been jealous, I don't know. Heck, there were guys on my own team this summer that said things to me like that. I just ignored them and used it as motivation."

"Sometimes people would say good things to me like ‘I'm glad you chose Illinois, it's a great program and you should do well there', so I guess now I have to take the good with the bad," he stated.

For the remainder of the summer there are no plans to get back down to Champaign because school will be starting soon, but once things slow down for this big man (that many think is still growing) he will get back down there. Stay tuned for more on this development once the season starts.
