Maryland pass rusher awaits Offers

When you play on the same team as one of the nations elite recruits like Derrick Williams your chances of being noticed are significantly higher. Williams received over 60 offers before choosing Penn State last year, most of those schools all made the trek to Greenbelt, Maryland to see Williams and they noticed a few of his teammates along the way.

Travon Bellamy and Nico Scott have received scholarship offers, now one of their teammates appears to be closing in on a few of his own. Eleanor Roosevelt (Md.) defensive end Blake Smith (6-2, 223, 4.7) is still looking for that elusive first offer, despite the fact that he registered 80 tackles and 16 sacks as a junior.

"I think Pittsburgh and Illinois are close to offering me," Smith said. "Pitt sends mail every week, its usually hand written things from Coach Gattuso, Coach Wannstedt, Coach Partridge , or Coach Junko. Illinois also sends a lot of stuff to me."

The All-County selection camped at Pittsburgh and Maryland this summer.

Pittsburgh: "I thought it went real well there. It started out as Coach Gattuso and Coach Partridge talking to me, but by the time I was done all the coaches talked to me. When I speak to Derron Thomas he says they always ask about me."

Maryland: "I did really well there. It seemed like a lot of other schools heard about my performance there because I got a lot of interest after that camp."

Smith has garnered interest from North Carolina, Boston College, Syracuse, Kent State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Illinois, Akron, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Maryland.

During the spring, Smith took a pair of unofficial visits to Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech: "It was a good trip, but it seemed almost like there were certain kids there that they wanted to talk to. They have a real nice campus and I like their academics.

Pittsburgh: "It went well. I went there with Nico and Travon. I feel like I really connected with the coaching staff."

Smith would like to check out a few more schools in the near future.

"I may try and check out Wisconsin, Syracuse, Ohio State, and Tennessee really soon," he said.

Who are the early leaders for the pass-rush specialist?

"Right now I would say Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Illinois, and West Virginia."
