Derrick Rose and Evan Turner are not only two of the top players in the state of Illinois, but the nation. Rose is a consensus top 10 player and Turner is listed here at Scout.com at the nation's 49th best prospect.
Sources close to the program will tell you that Rose, from Simeon High School in Chicago likes the Illini and had kept a close eye on who else the head Coach, Bruce Weber, is bringing to campus. It's no secret that Rose and Illini commit Eric Gordon have become friends, but also in the mix of things Gordon has somewhat become friends with Turner.
If the Illini were to land Rose along with Turner and Gordon as mentioned here last week by Turner himself, "It was be an awesome backcourt to be apart of." Rumor had it that Rose was leaning towards Memphis but the Illini are right in the mix of this recruitment.
Most thought for sure Turner was going to pull the trigger and give Weber the verbal he is looking for. It sounds like things went very well on his unofficial visit and now Turner is waiting things out to make sure this is the right choice for him. Weber was told by other national experts with the class of 2007 and 2008 that he would really benefit from that magical Final Four run. By getting the verbal commitment from Gordon proves that. Gordon could potentially become of the best players to ever put on an Illini uniform.
Right now, looking who Weber is bringing in and who he's after, it looks like the pieces of another great team. The size of big men that can post is promising along with ones that can shoot and guards that can score, pass and defend.
Stay close to the Turner situation as the staff keeps close tabs on him.
