"He's the Best in the Game." -Demetri McCamey

With all the hoopla surrounding the recruiting game recently it's very easy to forget about the ones that love (for many reasons) the University of Illinois. I had the opportunity to chat with future Illini Demetri McCamey. You will need to get inside to read about the many reasons he became an Illini.

Kedric:
How do you compare Coach Bruce Weber to other coaches in the college game, recruiting and X's and O's?

Demetri:
To me he's the best in the game; that's why I decided to come to Illinois. School always comes first, but when it comes to basketball I want to play for Coach Weber. He's as good as anyone coach coaching the game right now.

Kedric:
Did you get a chance to visit Champaign last weekend when they brought in all the recruits?

Demetri:
No, I couldn't make it. I had some family issues I needed to take care of, but I wish I could have been there though. I'm going to get back down there soon because the next two weeks there will be a lot of recruits on campus and I want to be there.

Kedric:
What are your thoughts on the incoming players with you?

Demetri:
A lot of people say Coach Weber can't recruit and that's bull. You want to know why some people say that? It's because he does it the right way. He recruited me, so I know. What some people have to understand is a lot of players pick a school for a lot of reasons and it's not always the coach. People that know Coach Weber knows he can coach and recruit.

Kedric:
Why did you pick Illinois?

Demetri:
I picked Illinois because I wanted to go to a school where I can win championships. I want the State of Illinois to experience that because it's my home state.

Kedric:
What would you like to see done with the other class of 2007 scholarship?

Demetri:
Oh, I can tell you right now that since Derrick Rose told people his top five schools, a lot of people will want to play for Illinois. I think most people knew they were going after him very hard. Illinois is a great school and people will be trying to get that scholarship and it will be someone really good. That's why I want to go down there the next couple weekends if it works out.

Kedric:
How close are you with Michigan guard Darquavis Tucker and when was the last time you spoke with him?

Demetri:
Well, it's been a couple weeks since I've talked with him. I know he was at Illinois this past weekend. He really likes Dee Brown so that was good he was there. I can't say for sure which way he's leaning for school. I know he told me that Illinois is in his top list of schools. But like I said before, players will be trying to get that scholarship now.

Kedric:
What impresses you most about Coach Bruce Weber?

Demetri:
That's easy - he tells the truth and he can coach.

Kedric:
What do you look forward to the most when you get to college?

Demetri:
School, playing basketball and being with my teammates and trying to win championships. We can do that at Illinois.

Demetri McCamey is a four-star recruit and is one of the nation's top point guards. Sometimes in this job it's very difficult to get a good read on a person. After speaking with McCamey, I'm certain of this: he will become a fan favorite. He's very excited about playing for the orange and blue. McCamey is very competitive and knows what it takes to win and cares about his teammates. When we talked about recruiting and what people think of Coach Weber, let's just say McCamey knows what kind of player he is and the kind of players that Weber will be bringing in to join him. Don't tell him that Weber can't recruit he takes that personal.
