Zook is the Pied Piper to Champaign

Where do Illinois fans want to start, a new look to Memorial Stadium or a new look football team? Illinois fans can have both. The construction is under way in Champaign, both at the stadium, and in the offices of head coach Ron Zook. Zook continues to amaze fans, the media, and opposing coaches with the string of athletes he's bringing from all over the country to the Midwest.

Thursday DT D'Angelo McCray gave head Coach Ron Zook another piece to the puzzle with a verbal commitment to play for Illinois. When Zook held his first press conference in Champaign, he said "I will recruit the best players I can to make Illinois successful. I don't need much sleep; you miss out when you do that." Zook hasn't wasted much time in making this prediction come true.

From the looks of things Zook's not sleeping at all these days. McCray, a Jacksonville, Florida native whom at one time picked the Florida Gators, had a change of heart and de-committed earlier this year. He settled on two new finalists in Illinois and Florida State, and Illinois and Zook ended up winning out.

"I just really liked it, they have a nice family environment, all the players hang out and get along, I noticed that right away, they also stick together and believe in each other" said McCray.

McCray didn't have to call anyone from the staff at Florida State to inform them of his decision. "My high school coach did all that for me, I actually knew Wednesday night where I wanted to go."

Most believe this streak is not about to stop, neither does McCray. "I usually don't bother other players I let them decide where they want to play at, but I know there's a few other guys in the mix that's coming up" Said McCray.

Zook is just getting warmed up. In-state stars Martez Wilson and Josh Brent are set to announce their college choices this Thursday at Simeon High School in Chicago. Last Wednesday night Wilson said "Illinois will be good next year; they were young but got better every game." There are no guarantees in recruiting, but the Illini appear to be in very good shape with these two Chicago athletes.
