Watkins Cites Bruce Weber for Verbal

When Quinton Watkins verbaled to Bruce Weber last Saturday it was a shocker, but according to the athletic guard from the West Coast, that's not really true. Read here for details.

Quinton Watkins, a 6-foot-3 guard from Compton Dominguez (CA), knew early last week he wanted to play for Bruce Weber. "Oh, I had my mind made up last Wednesday but I told the coaches on Saturday night. I like everything about Coach Price and Coach Weber. What they have done with former guards like Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther Head made it an easy decision for me," said Watkins.

"People out here know what kind of program Illinois has and its tradition. I haven't been down there for a visit but I watch them play on TV a lot when I can. The offense they run is great for my game. I'm a very good shooter and defensive player and that's what they like at Illinois, so I think I will fit in fine there," added Watkins.

This current season Watkins' team is 10-4. His numbers are 21.0 ppg, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists.

What about where this young man is ranked? "That stuff doesn't mean a thing to me. I just go out and play, work on my game and get better every time out. That's the bottom line - if you can play you can play the game."

According to Watkins he plans to take the ACT or SAT this month. "I haven't done either of those yet, but I'm planning on doing that real soon. I have a 3.6 GPA so once I take the test I'll be good to go," Watkins stated.

At one time, Watkins committed to USC but backed out. He chose the Illini over San Diego State and Pepperdine. Watkins is from the class of 2007.
