"I know I can help next year." - Q. Watkins

With Illinois' recent struggles on the perimeter, Head Coach Bruce Weber will have two confident guards coming in next year. Just how much Quinton Watkins and Demetri McCamey play will depend on them. Read here for more on one Illini guard.

With this years Illinois team, scoring was obviously a problem. They finished the year in eighth place with a scoring average of 65.4 ppg. What kept them in games this year was their defense. They were ranked second, only allowing 57.3 ppg. The season's far from over. The Big Ten Tournament is right around the corner and I feel the Illini will be dancing in the NCAA next week.

Quinton Watkins cares and wants to be and Illini. "I tried to call Coach Weber after the Iowa game but he was very busy so he didn't pick up. He will call me back when he's not as busy with the guys," said Watkins.

Don't think for one minute that Watkins is coming to Champaign next year just to watch. "I know I can help next year. I think it would be cool to come in and be a starter for them, but then again, because I'm a freshman I will take what I can get. But anything that's in front of me I'm going to take advantage of that's for sure," according to Watkins.

Let's face it - Watkins has the ability to score and put up points. That's why rumors are flying around about other schools asking for his services. "No one has contacted me about coming to their school. I don't know where that started from. I haven't talked with anyone; I'm going to Illinois. As a matter of fact, if things work out, I plan to visit there on my spring break sometime in April," Watkins said.

Last week his high school, Dominguez in California, lost to Artesia in overtime and Watkins could only watch as he had fouled out. "I finished with 20 points. If I would have stayed in the game we would have won. Now we have to wait to see if we can make the playoff. I hope we get in. If not I'll ask my coach to see if I will play in any all-star games. But we should make it."

Part of being a very successful athlete is being confident and Watkins knows what he does well and what he will bring to Weber and company. "I'm not going to lie. I can shoot it, I can take the ball to the basket, I can shoot off the dribble or off a pick, and I play good team and on the ball defense. I work hard on my game. I can't wait to come in with McCamey ," Watkins stated. For those that haven't seen Watkins, we have AAU footage of one of his games here at Scout.com.
