Texas Star has Illinois Ties

Shawn Williams is a member of the Class of 2009. Even though he's somewhat young major colleges have taken notice and Illinois is right up there in the mix. Read here for more on Williams.

Shawn Williams is a 6-6 small forward that plays high school basketball for Duncanville in Texas. Last night we spoke with Shawn Williams, Sr. and he informed us about the likes of his son. "Shawn is a competitor. His high school team went 39-0 this season and they finished the year ranked 3rd in the nation by USA Today. He did pretty good this past season; he averaged 18 ppg and 9 rebounds - the leader in both," said Williams.

"Illinois has offered my son; they did that way back in November. He likes them a lot. When anyone mentions what colleges he likes, he always mentions the University of Illinois. I have a lot of family up there in Illinois. I have an uncle up there and a brother that lives in Chicago, so we know about the program. Sometime in the summer of his junior year we're going to go up there and stay with him and then take an unofficial to them," he added.

Only being a sophomore, Williams doesn't have a favorite at this point and will not name other suitors, but said Illinois is doing all the right things so far.

InsideIllini.com has learned that former Illini assistant coach Billy Gillispie and now the head man at Kentucky offered him a scholarship to play for the Wildcats. Other offers have come from Texas and Baylor.

Williams is a four-star recruit that soon many major college programs in the nation will be after. We'll keep you updated on the recruitment of Williams and his interest in the Illini program.
