Supo Sanni Makes it Official

Giving you fair warning, in case you didn't already know, Ron Zook can recruit. And it is clear, he is by no means finished. This weekend, Zook received verbal commitment number 17 from Supo Sanni. We caught up with Sanni this morning to hear why he chose the Illini.

Currently, the Fighting Illini have the 16th best recruiting class in the country with seventeen commitments to date. The Illini are just behind two traditional powers, Michigan and Ohio State, which check in here at Scout.com at ninth and eleventh respectively.

Sanni is a 6-4 190 receiver and safety with 4.6 speed, hailing from Homewood-Flossmoor HS in (IL). We caught up the dual-threat athlete recently for a Q & A.

Kedric:
Why Illinois, what was it that sold you on playing for them?

Supo:

It was a great fit. Illinois is an up-and-coming program. They're going in the right direction and I will have a chance to play early for them.

Kedric:
How was your visit in Champaign?

Supo:
Well, I was there for the Wisconsin game and really saw what direction the program was going, the players and fans. All of it was great. I was down there again this weekend for the Ball State game, so I told Coach Zook before I left I wanted to play for him.

Kedric:
What reaction did you get from Zook after you told him of your decision?

Supo:
He was very excited and so was Coach Locksley about my decision. Illinois gave me my first offer and that meant a lot to me. They were recruiting me my junior year and I picked them over Iowa who was my second choice.

Kedric:
What position did the coaching staff say you would play on the field?

Supo:
Well both sides of the ball, but I will start out as a free safety.

Kedric:
What is it right now that makes the Illinois program so attractive?

Supo:
The amazing job they're doing down there this year and compared to last year, seeing how much better they are now. Coach Zook is a good coach and a great recruiter and they will be playing in a bowl game this year and I want to be apart of what they're doing at Illinois.

Kedric:
Who was your host this past weekend?

Supo:
Juice Williams and Chris James.

Kedric:
Thanks Supo and good luck to you.

Supo:
Thanks for the call.

With another talented prospect on board, you can be sure the future of the Illini football program is bright. And there is no doubt that Zook and his staff are working on mining more talent from the high school ranks to fill the remaining slots in the 2008 recruiting class. Keep it tuned for more updates as they develop.
