The Latest On Lenzelle Smith
Did you hear or read about the comment that was made from your son regarding a game issue with NLP teammate and Illinois recruit Brandon Paul, basically demanding him to step up his game?
No, I haven't heard that, but if it were true, I wouldn't be surprised, (laughter). That's how he is, he's very, very competitive. He wants everyone to be at the top of their game.
How do you think Lenzelle played last weekend?
I think he was true to his character; he scored in a lot of different ways, inside and out. He also showed he's not just one-dimensional by getting others involved with his assists. I also thought he was a lot better rebounding last weekend.
Since Illinois was the first major DI school to offer Lenzelle, have you seen a difference in schools now looking at him?
Well Kedric, SIU was the first school to offer him; they saw him play last year when he played for the Illinois Stars. But the first major school was Illinois. Today, Northwestern called and put an offer on the table for him, they have done a great job of recruiting Lenzelle as well. I also spoke with Kentucky's Tracy Webster today, they're very interested in him now. Also, Virginia and Clemson are trying to set up visits. Recently, Florida has shown some interest. Head Coach Billy Donovan is going to speak at a clinic and wants to talk. Stanford, USC, and now that Purdue has Owens, they will get a good look. DePaul told me that Lenzelle is at the top of their priority list so I don't want to leave them out. And the last school is Indiana, now that Coach Tom Crean is there, they have expressed some major interest.
Where does Bruce Weber and Illinois stand with Lenzelle now?
Illinois is still one of his top choices. Let's face it, Illinois set the bar, and they set it pretty high as far as we're concerned. They were the first major school to offer Lenzelle.
What are his plans for the remainder of the summer?
He's supposed to get an invite to the Nike Jamboree, but we'll see if that comes or not; also the Reebok Headliner in Chicago. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, he works out with a personal trainer, and on Tuesday and Thursday he works out with Dickey Simpkins, so it can't get much better than that for him.
With the recent stellar play of Smith, more offers are sure to pour in for his services. Stay tuned as we keep you informed here at InsideIllini.com.
