Lenzelle Smith Jr. is a 6'3" guard who attends Zion-Benton High School. Smith has opened a lot of eyes with his play during his sophomore season and this spring during the AAU circuits. And for those who think Smith is about ready to pick a college, you couldn't be further from the truth. "I haven't decided on a school yet. I don't think I'm going to commit early like a lot of guys, I'm going to take my time and not rush things," Smith said.
Even though Smith wants to take his time, he got a good idea of what playing in Champaign would be all about, as he and his school took part in the recent event at the Assembly Hall. "I really enjoyed my time at Illinois. There were some good teams and players down there. I played against Whitney Young, who had players like Chris Colvin and Anthony Johnson. I think I did pretty good. I played hard, shot the ball well, made some good passes, and just overall, I was happy with my performance. The coaches down there told me how well I played and they also let me know how important I am to them and they would like for me to go to college there," said Smith. Illinois has offered Smith a scholarship.
Smith is aware of what the future holds for Illinois, "Oh, they're going to be good, really good. They have some great players coming. With all those players, they'll be able to compete with any team in the country. They're going to be that good I think. Then you look at the guys coming in from my class, Jereme Richmond and Crandall Head. Wow! Look out, they'll be fun to watch," said Smith.
Those people close to Smith know how much he likes Illinois. Despite his strong interest in the Illini, he's taking his time and really checking out all schools that interest him. As of late, his list of schools include: DePaul, Illinois, SIU, Northwestern, Texas A & M, and Wisconsin.
