When Rock Island guard Chasson Randle was in the 8th grade it was easy to see he had all the tools necessary to play big-time college basketball. His junior high team went 37-0 during that time frame, but Randle never once showed he was better than the team or the game itself.
Every day we read about the negatives and what's wrong with sports, but once you meet Randle he serves as a reminder that there are still plenty of great kids out there with the right mission. "I don't know how to explain what's happened to me but I think if you work hard and do things right good things will happen for you," Randle said.
For the longest time it was uncertain if his home state school would put an offer on the table for him. "I think Illinois offered me August 2nd," Randle said. "I don't really get caught up in why they didn't offer me sooner. My first offer came from Indiana. I was shocked at first. I was surprised they offered so soon; I guess I wasn't expecting it."
Randle currently has offers from Indiana, Illinois and Iowa State. He told us he thinks Purdue will put one on the table soon. Just like other athletes, Randle has received a lot of attention of late.
When will this young man decide on a college? "I'm not sure," Randle stated. "I'm going to talk it over with my parents. We want to make sure everything is right when I pick one."
This 2011 prospect definitely has his head in the right place. He is an extremely bright kid in the classroom and he doesn't allow jealousy to affect him. "So far everyone around me supports all the attention I'm getting," Randle acknowledged. "That's great, but if it changes there's nothing I can do about it but keep working harder."
Sometime in September Randle will make another visit to Illinois but no date has been set. However, he is planning on being in Champaign on October 11th. Stay tuned here at InsideIllini.com for more on Randle's visit to Champaign.
