Meyers Leonard Makes Hard Work a Priority

When Meyers Leonard committed to the University of Illinois it came as a surprise to some, but this 6'10' junior has all the tools and fits the mold of Head Coach Bruce Weber's offense.

Meyers Leonard is a four-star recruit from Robinson, Illinois and a member of the Class of 2010. Leonard was the last player to commit to the basketball team, and he's relieved the recruiting process is over. "It's been a lot easier," Leonard said. "No one calls now, only the Illinois coaches. I still get a few letters, but nothing like before."

Right now its football season, but the basketball players know this is prime preparation time. They aim to make a big year-to-year leap through a lot of workouts and Leonard is no different. "I work out every single day," Leonard said. "I'm normally here after a sports program. Then I'm out shooting. I'll go up to the park and play later that night. This is a big year for me."

According to Leonard, his last visit to Champaign was June 15th. "That date was an unofficial visit for me," Leonard stated. "I think I'm going back there sometime in October. I'm sure they will call my coaches to let me know."

Leonard is upbeat about the future of the Illini.

"Our class is really good," Leonard declared. "I like the players they have coming in. I'm not sure if there's any more scholarships out there, but from everything I hear we should be pretty good in the future."

Leonard accepted the Illini's scholarship offer over ones from Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, and Southern Illinois.
