Top Junior Kentuckian Likes Illinois

Recruiting for 2009 is almost over, but Illinois coaches are already deeply involved with the 2010 class. Illinois football coach Ron Zook and his staff are making favorable impressions with top high school juniors including Stephan Robinson. All Robinson has done so far is lead his team to two straight Kentucky state championships.

Louisville Central High School is coming off a remarkable two season stretch. This year, the Yellow Jackets limped into the postseason with losses in their final two regular season games. Nevertheless, Central reeled off five consecutive blowouts en route to the state title, including a 40-19 defeat of Jackson Breathitt County in the title game.

"Overall, it was a good season," Robinson states. "As a team, we had our ups and downs. We were all dedicated though, and we all had one goal, the state championship. It says a lot about us."

As for Stephan, a receiver, he has gotten better each and every season.

"I came a long way this season. I sat out most of my freshman year because I broke my elbow in the 2nd game of the season. My sophomore year, I was doing well. I was catching touchdowns, but I wasn't the go to guy though.

"This past season, the quarterback and I had great chemistry because we're best friends. I was a smarter receiver this year. I read the defense and took advantage of it. I think I had 15 touchdowns on the season. In the state championship game, I had 120 yards and a touchdown."

The 5'-10", 170 pound receiver also played defense.

"It depended on where the coach needed me. I was mainly a cornerback, but sometimes I played safety."

Stephan Robinson currently has two offers, one from the Big 10 and one from the Big East.

"Illinois and Louisville have offered. Michigan State, Indiana, Western Kentucky, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Central Michigan have sent letters and been in contact with me.

"Coach (Kurt) Beathard is my recruiting coach at Illinois. The letter from Illinois came early in the season. It was the 2nd game of the season against Male. It was a big game for us. I think it was the game of the week. Coach Beathard told me at the game that I had an offer and asked if I had gotten it yet. I said I hadn't, but the next day when I got home it was there offering me a full ride."

Stephan made one college visit this past season, and he had great things to say about it.

"The only school that I went to was Illinois for the Indiana-Illinois game. The trip was amazing. I remember walking through the gate and seeing the atmosphere at Illinois. I knew right then that I wanted to be a part of that.

"I met all the coaches. All of them were really nice and were really good guys. When I was there, I thought to myself that this is a place I could see myself going to for four years. Not just playing football for four years, but also for a good education."

Stephan currently doesn't have a timeline to make a final decision.

"The way things are going to right now, it's hard to decide. I want to commit to Illinois. I'm enjoying the recruitment process right now though. I'm worried about running track this spring and my grades this year and next. If I wanted to decide to right now, if I had to decide right now, it would be Illinois."

Stephan reports a 3.3 GPA and will take the ACT next month.
