Offers Pouring In For Lineman Tomlinson

These are exciting times for some football prospects. The May evaluation period expanded the college opportunities for a number of players. In the case of Lane Tech's Laken Tomlinson, his recruitment has exploded exponentially. The talented lineman has seen offers pour in from around the country.

Just this week, traditional Big 10 power Ohio State came calling for Laken Tomlinson. Besides the Buckeyes, offers continue to roll in for the 6'4", 290 pound lineman. There was a report that Tennessee has offered, but Tomlinson is not certain of that yet.

"The most recent offer I got was Ohio State. I knew Tennessee was coming around, but I haven't talked to my coach yet. I'm not sure where that's coming from. I was supposed to make a call to their head coach. I guess you can say Tennessee has offered. Some of my more recent offers have been Duke, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and Iowa State."

In addition, he already has offers from Illinois, Purdue, and New Mexico amongst several others. He's also being recruited by Iowa, Stanford, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Michigan.

Tomlinson recently visited the Illinois campus, but it had nothing to do with football. Instead, he traveled to Champaign to participate in a track meet.

"The trip during the track meet was great, it was pretty fun. I definitely had background knowledge of the campus, and I got to lead my teammates around and shown them what I know about the U of I. It was pretty fun getting to know everything about Illinois because I do have the general background knowledge.

"It was fun as usual. I didn't get to talk to Coach Mitchell there because he was busy, but I did talk to Coach Mitchell before and after the visit. I also got to talk to Coach Zook."

Although the summer months are usually a very busy time for most recruits, Tomlinson doesn't see the need to visit colleges for summer camps.

"I don't think I'm going to be heading to any camps. My coach told me that I'd only need to be going to summer camps to pick up offers. I have so many offers so why dress up and put on pads?"

The Lane Tech Indian has a general timeline to help him make his final decision.

"My timeline is basically to get as much information about each college. After that I'll start making visits. I'll probably take a couple of visits over the summer. During the summer, I'll probably narrow my choices down to a top 5.

"I have to go see all the other colleges so that I can judge them fairly. I would love to go to all the colleges that have offered me, but that would be impossible for me because I haven't visited most of them.

"Schools that I'm looking to visit right now are probably Duke on June 19th and Ohio State."

The 6'-5", 285 pounder will also be working hard with his teammates to prepare for the upcoming season.

"The whole team is going to be working out with our strength and conditioning and linebacker coach during the summer. We'll be working on everything. We have a lot of returning starters from last year so we should have a pretty great team. I want to come out with another city championship."

Individually, Tomlinson recently completed his track season.

"I just finished off shotput and discus for state finals. I did pretty well. I didn't qualify for the state finals, but I did much better than sophomore year definitely. I'm looking forward to next year. I'll probably do some damage there."
