Cornerback John Gibson may play deep in the heart of Texas, but that hasn't kept Midwest schools from knocking on his door.
Today the 5-foot-10, 175-pound rising senior picked up another scholarship offer as Western Kentucky extended a full ride. It's Gibson's third offer to date and second in the Midwest as the Hilltoppers join the Hoosiers on his short list.
"My first offer was from Indiana," said Gibson. "I think they had called my head coach at the school and he informed me that they had offered. That was awhile ago, though, and I haven't talked with the new staff and don't really know much about them yet."
Gibson said his only contact with the Hoosiers recently has been through their Facebook page. He would like to get to Bloomington for their camp this summer, but says his budget might not allow it. Despite interest from Arizona, Houston, Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech right now, Gibson said he may have to forgo the summer circuit.
That will put a lot of emphasis on his upcoming senior year at Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas (just outside Houston). He's already thinking of what he will need to prepare for a big season.
"I'm just working on improving my footwork and getting into shape so I can play both ways this season," said Gibson, who will also play wide receiver. "It will be my first time doing that and I want to make sure I'm ready for it."
Most of his recruiting interest is at cornerback, but some schools have told him he could play a role as a receiver or special teams member as well. The Hoosiers see Gibson primarily as a cornerback due to his coverage skills.
"I think I get a good jam off the line in press coverage and that I have good speed, too," said Gibson.
Gibson says he is in no hurry to make a decision and still wants to check out some more schools. Ultimately, his decision will be based on where he feels he fits in best, even if that means leaving the Lone Star State.
"I'm just looking for somewhere that I feel comfortable," said Gibson. "It doesn't matter how far away it is. I'm not afraid to leave home. I've left home before so it ain't no thing to me."
