Indiana Football Practice: Day 2 Recap

Saturday's second day of IU football practice was closed to the media but here's a quick report from Day 2. Look for practice reports every day leading up to the Aug. 29 season opener against Indiana State.

Indiana's second and third practices of preseason camp on Saturday and Sunday were both closed to the media with no availability to coaches or players. IU media relations, however, helped us recap the weekend.

Here's a quick look at Saturday's second day of IU football practice:

Indiana's second day of football practice was Saturday, and some of the Hoosiers have already noticed a difference in the practice intensity in comparison to years' past.

Indiana's starting middle linebacker last season, David Cooper, spoke in an interview about the practices' intensity.

"The practices are more competitive," Cooper said. "We've only been out here for two days, but it's been real competitive. Guys are flying around."

Cooper attributed some of that to the intensity and talent of the freshman class. Co-defensive coordinator Doug Mallory talked about the freshman class as well.

"We've got a lot of true freshmen on the defensive side that we're counting on helping us here this fall," Mallory said. "I think it's given us a little bit more depth and a little bit better competition on the defensive side."

The freshmen at defensive end come as welcome additions to an Indiana defense that ranked last in the Big Ten in points allowed, giving up 35.2 points per contest in 2012.

Although the defense struggled last season, safety Mark Murphy likes the strides he has seen over the summer and in the first two practices.

"The defense is looking great," Murphy said. "We've got a lot of things to do, a lot of things to improve upon, but we're just flying around trying to do our best. " Top Stories
