Not surprisingly, defense continues to be a primary focus for future recruiting classes. Five of the 10 players committed for the next class are on defense. They include one cornerback and four defensive linemen.
So who are some of the players IU is targeting to fill out the class? Today, we'll look at the targets on defensive side of the ball for the class of 2014. Please understand this will always be a partial list. These are some of the players we know IU has interest in. The list can be a fluid one.
Tegray Scales continues to be a high Hoosier priority. The 6-2, 210-pound outside linebacker is out of Colerain High School in Cincinnati. He has interest from some of the Big Ten's elite programs such as Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
But as one person close to the program told me with respect to Scales if someone was to hold a gun to IU's head and tell the Hoosiers they could only take one more recruit, Scales would be the guy.
That being said, the linebacker position isn't a huge Indiana priority because the Hoosiers took four players at that position last year. T.J. Simmons, Marcus Oliver, Clyde Newton and Steve Funderburk are among those true freshmen competing for jobs this season.
Other linebackers getting recent interest are Airius Moore, a 215-pound prospect out of Beaver Creek (Ohio) High School, Dameon Willis, a 5-11, 211-pound linebacker from St. Ignatius in Cleveland, Ohio and Richard Dorvilus, a 3-star junior college linebacker from Hutchinson, Kan.
There are lots of safeties and corners that have been getting good looks from Indiana of late.
Zavior Hixie, a 5-11, 180-pound cornerback from Buford, Ga. visited IU in June and the Hoosiers are interested. Hixie has Big Ten interest from Wisconsin and Illinois, too. Another player that IU is very interested in is safety Miquell Cotton out of O'Fallon, Ill. Cotton, who is 5-9, 175, has several offers but three seem to stand out – Syracuse, Iowa State and Indiana.
There are three other defensive backs in the state of Florida that Indiana is interested in as well. Tony Fields, a 5-11, 200-pound cornerback out of Godby High School in Tallahassee has an offer and is firmly on the radar. Another one is Juan Jenkins, a 6-foot, 200-pound DB out of Gainesville (Fla.) High School.
And Brujoun Bonner, a 6-3, 190-pound safety out of St. Petersburg Lakewood High doesn't have an IU offer yet but one could be coming soon.
Those are a few of the names on Indiana's recruiting list as it continues to attempt to beef up the class of 2014.
We'll have periodic stories in the future on IU football recruiting.
