Hoops Recruiting Central: Big Weekend

Indiana currently doesn't have a player committed in the 2014 class. Could that change this weekend?

Hello, and welcome to the debut of my Hoops Recruiting Central blog. For those of you who are unfamiliar with me, I come to AllHoosiers.com after two years covering IU basketball and basketball recruiting at Inside the Hall.

My plan for this blog is to update you on a daily basis on anything and everything that is going on in the world of IU basketball recruiting. During the basketball season, there may be more team-related posts, but for now, it's all basketball recruiting all the time.

Feel free to interact with me, ask me questions, etc. whenever you want to make this blog more of a conversations at times. We'll have our first mailbag in here later this week and I think you will find that's a productive way to get out a lot of information while also answering questions you, the reader, may have.

As for the actual news in recruiting, as we reported yesterday, 2014 Brooklyn, N.Y. guard Isaiah Whitehead will take his first official visit to Indiana at some point in September.

This is a big deal. Indiana didn't contact Whitehead for the first time until the day after James Blackmon Jr. decommitted, and the Hoosiers will be getting his first visit. That's pretty impressive.

Whitehead is the No. 12 player in the 2014 class, and the No. 1 shooting guard, according to Scout.com's new rankings released Wednesday. The other schools remaining in his final four are Minnesota, UCLA and Seton Hall, but you have to feel with Syracuse eliminated that the Hoosiers are the favorite to land Whitehead.

Also in the 2014 class, Richmond, Va. guard Robert Johnson will take his official visit to Indiana this weekend. His family will come in with him, along with AAU coach Boo Williams. I've reported recently that Indiana is leading the pursuit of Johnson, and that continues to be the case. I think there's a real good chance Johnson will commit after his visit to Bloomington. Stay tuned on that one.

Malachi Richardson, a 2015 guard, is also taking a visit to Indiana this weekend. Richardson is the third-ranked small forward in his class and the Hoosiers have been recruiting him for some time.

It's early in his recruitment, but 2017 G/F Kris Wilkes will take an unofficial visit to Indiana on Friday. He's just a freshman in high school, but he's already 6-foot-6 and extremely athletic. That will be one to watch in the future.

More to come later. Thanks for reading.
