Cincinnati, Ohio – Indiana topped Xavier on the road Sunday afternoon, 62-55, to give IU its best start in program history at 13-0. The 13-game winning streak is the longest ever in school history and IU ends non-conference play without a loss for the fourth time ever.
Tabitha Gerardot led the way for Indiana with 19 points and eight boards and Simone Deloach finished with a double-double, recording 10 points with 10 rebounds.
Xavier (5-6) jumped ahead 5-2 before an Alexis Gassion steal on the defensive end led to a Taylor Agler fast-break layup at the 16:58 mark. Gerardot followed with a 3-point field goal as Agler later went coast-to-coast for two-straight layups to give IU an 11-5 lead. Gassion then hit a pair of free throws to cap an 11-0 Hoosier run.
The Musketeers cut the Hoosier lead to four, but Indiana (13-0) punched back with six-straight points thanks to a Deloach field goal and a Gerardot free throw and 3-pointer to give the Hoosiers their first double-digit lead, 19-9, with 12:07 on the clock.
Indiana built its lead to as much as 16 points in the first half, 27-11, thanks to holding XU without a field goal for a span of 6:05. But Xavier then scored 10-consecutive points make it a 27-21 score in the final minutes of the first half.
Larryn Brooks righted the ship for IU with a pair of free throws at the 2:21 mark. Karlee McBride came off the bench and nailed a 3-point bomb from the left wing to cap a quick 6-0 spurt for the Hoosiers to end the half and take a 33-21 lead into the locker room.
An Agler 3-point field goal at the 13:53 mark of the second half gave IU its biggest lead of the final 20 minutes at 47-32. The Hoosier offense then went cold as Indiana went nearly five minutes without scoring and Xavier cut the lead to single digits, 47-38, with 10:33 remaining. A Brooks steal and layup and a Gassion bucket pushed IU's lead back to 13 with 8:49 to go.
The Musketeers cut the Hoosier lead to eight, 58-50, before a Deloach lay in and a pair of Gerardot free throws put IU in a comfortable 12-point lead with 1:41 to play. Xavier scored the final five points of the game as IU held on for its sixth true road win of the year.
To go along with her 19 points, Gerardot skied for eight boards and added three assists. Deloach accomplished her second career double-double. Agler tallied nine points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and tied her career high with four steals. Brooks added nine points and had three assists. Gassions skied for a career-high 10 boards and had six points with a pair of steals.
As a team, IU outrebounded Xavier, 44-40, but struggled shooting as the Hoosiers combined to shoot 37.7 percent from the field.
Indiana will next take on Iowa in Assembly Hall on Thursday, Jan. 2, to open Big Ten play. The Hoosiers and Hawkeyes will tip at 7 p.m. ET in Bloomington.
