UPDATE: Sun Belt regular season champion Georgia State lost in its conference title game, meaning another NIT automatic bid is gone. That's not good news for the Hoosiers and their hopes at making the NIT.
It's Selection Sunday, but it's a little less exciting for Indiana fans than the last couple of years.
The Hoosiers will not be included in this year's NCAA Tournament field after finishing the season just 17-15 after a first-round exit in the Big Ten Tournament against Illinois last Thursday.
Now, Indiana isn't even a lock for the NIT. Heading into tonight, the Hoosiers are squarely on the bubble.
I've looked at three different NIT projections in the last couple hours. Two have Indiana in the NIT field, and one has the Hoosiers on the outside looking in.
The NIT Bracket Project (bracketmatrix.com) has IU as a six seed still, putting the Hoosiers against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Big Apple Buckets (nycbuckets.com) has Indiana out of the field, putting Indiana State in its place. According to that site, Ohio, San Francisco and Indiana are the tams that just missed the cut.
Dratings.com has Indiana has the top six seed in the field, pitting them against three-seed Clemson in the first round.
The NIT selection show will air on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Our publisher, Terry Hutchens, will be on RTV6 with Dave Furst at 11:30 p.m. tonight to talk IU basketball.
