Indiana led by nine with under 3 minutes to play Thursday night and then withstood an 8-0 Belmont rally to end the game in a 48-47 victory in the first round of the women's NIT. The Hoosiers will play Marquette Saturday night at Assembly Hall in the second round.

It wasn't pretty but the Indiana women's basketball team is advancing to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

Indiana built up a nine-point lead with 2:51 to play Thursday night and then withstood a furious Belmont rally as the Hoosiers held on for a 48-47 victory at Assembly Hall.

Indiana (19-12) will host Marquette Saturday night at Assembly Hall in second round action.

Larryn Brooks and Lyndsay Leikem led IU with 11 points each and Simone Deloach added 10.

IU led 24-21 at the half and then open the second half on a 14-3 to take control of the game and lead 38-24.

But Belmont refused to go down without a fight.

Indiana led 48-39 with 2:51 to play following back-to-back field goals by Deloach. But Belmont would score the final eight points.

IU's Nicole Bell missed the front end of a one-and-one with 5.6 seconds to play and Belmont raced the other way trying to take the lead. But Indiana's Alexis Gassion stripped the ball away just past midcourt to secure IU's first postseason win since 2009.

Indiana shot just 33.3 percent from the field but won the rebounding battle by 15 and only had seven turnovers.

IU's second round WNIT game with Marquette Saturday night will tip at Assembly Hall at 7 p.m. ET.
