IU baseball opens B1G play with 5-3 win

Indiana opened Big Ten baseball action with a 5-3 victory over Michigan Friday as Joey DeNato improved to 4-1 on the year and Casey Rodrigue had three hits and three RBI.

The Indiana University baseball team opened Big Ten play Friday afternoon with a 5-3 victory over Michigan at Bart Kaufman Field.

Junior Casey Rodrigue collected three hits and three RBI while Joey DeNato picked up his fourth win in five decisions. The senior lefty allowed three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He also had five strikeouts.

The series resumes Saturday at 2:05 and wraps up Sunday at 1:05. Indiana is now 9-1 against Michigan over the last three plus seasons. The past two years, IU has swept the Wolverines in three-game series.Sophomore Scott Effross earned his second save of the season as he tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

IU (11-8, 1-0) won the game despite stranding 16 runners on base. IU won for the sixth time in the last eight games and improved to 4-0 at home this season.

Rodrigue had a two-run, two-out triple to score the first two runs of the game in the second. Sam Travis then singled to score Rodrigue and put the Hoosiers up 3-0. A Nick Ramos sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the fifth.

After Michigan rallied for three runs, it was once again Rodrigue that got IU going in the seventh. He first made a great defensive play with two outs and runners on second and third when he made a great diving catch and then scored the game's final run with a fielders choice RBI in the bottom of the inning.

Michigan put runners on the corners with no outs in the ninth, but Effross retired the final three in order to close it out.
