Hoops Recruiting Central: IU needs good news

It has been a difficult stretch on the recruiting front for the Hoosiers, but a 2014 signee may provide IU fans the positive news they are searching for.

It has been a fairly difficult month on the recruiting trail for Indiana. The Hoosiers made a solid run at Temple transfer Anthony Lee, but he committed elsewhere. Same goes for Marvin Clark, and possibly for Yante Maten, who was on campus Sunday and Monday.

Add that to the fact Jeremy Hollowell and Austin Etherington announced they would transfer, and Indiana fans are hungry for some good news.

Maybe they need to look no further than a 2014 recruit that is already signed with the Hoosiers.

James Blackmon Jr., a five-star shooting guard, should help Indiana fans look toward the future this week at the McDonald's All-American events in Chicago.

Blackmon Jr. is undoubtedly one of the best players in the class, and he showed that on Monday night. The former Marion guard won the 3-point competition in the week's first night of events.

The McDonald's All-American game will be played on Wednesday.

Sure, there hasn't been any great news on the recruiting front for the Hoosiers lately. But there hasn't exactly been any terrible news, either. Hollowell and Etherington weren't significant contributors, and there's not much else the Hoosiers could have done to land Lee. He was targeted by more than 50 schools. He was going to be hard to land regardless.

The Hoosiers still need a big man, and the options are becoming more and more limited. Josh Cunningham will announce his decision next Wednesday, and he would be a nice get for Indiana.

I will continue to coverage basketball recruiting religiously throughout the offseason, so stay tuned. AllHoosiers.com will be at a number of national and local AAU events and we will continue to bring you the best recruiting information on IU basketball.
