Travis named Big Ten player of week

Sam Travis picked up his fifth career Big Ten player of the week honor this week and the first of the 2014 season. Travis hit .462 over the weekend during a three-game sweep of Iowa. The Hoosiers are alone atop the Big Ten standings with an 8-1 conference mark.

The Big Ten-leading Indiana baseball team continues to collect awards.

IU first baseman Sam Travis was named Big Ten Player of the Week Tuesday after a big weekend series against Iowa. Travis hit .462 with two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored.

It is the fifth career Big Ten player of the week for Travis and his first this season. He is the four different offensive player for IU to be named player of the week this year. The other IU players included Kyle Schwarber, Casey Rodrigue and Dustin DeMuth.

Travis started the weekend series on Saturday with a pair of home runs in IU's 6-3 win over Iowa. He was 1-of-4 with an RBI in Indiana's 14-3 win on Sunday, and then had two more hits and the game-tying RBI single in the eighth inning Monday in IU's come from behind 5-3 victory.

IU is back in action Wednesday at Bart Kaufman Field against Indiana State. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. Top Stories
