Hartong named B1G player of the week

Indiana baseball remained red hot over the weekend taking a three-game series from Illinois. One of the reasons was the recent strong offensive play of Brad Hartong. Hartong was rewarded Monday with his first Big Ten player of the week honor.

The Big Ten baseball player of the week has been rotating among Indiana players all season long.

That was the case again Monday when Brad Hartong, a junior college transfer from Cypress (Calif.) College, was honored by the Big Ten. He becomes the seventh different IU player to receive a weekly Big Ten award this season.

Based on his play in a game against Ball State last week and three more against Illinois over the weekend, Hartong was more than a little deserving.

All he did was hit .529 with one home run, 10 RBI and a slugging percentage of .765 to help IU go 3-1 for the week. Hartong was 9-of-17 in the four games. Hartong had two hits in three of the games and three hits in the series finale against the Illini on Sunday.

Prior to his breakout week, Hartong had a total of one home run and 12 RBI for the season and had been hitting .247.
