Last weekend was the only opportunity for college coaches to watch recruits live until July, and the Indiana coaching staff did its best to make it a productive weekend.
Indiana coach Tom Crean and his staff attended a number of events over the weekend, including Nike EYBL Session 1 in Sacramento, NY2LA Spring Extravaganza in Minneapolis, adidas Uprising in Dallas and the Under Armour Jayhawk Invitational in Kansas.
Crean began the weekend in Minneapolis watching 2015 prospects Matt Heldt and Evan Boudreaux. Heldt, 6-foot-10 from Wisconsin, currently only owns offers from smaller schools (Green Bay, Milwaukee, Northern Illinois and Toledo). Boudreaux, a 6-foot-7 prospect from Illinois, has offers from Boston College, Bucknell, Dartmouth, DePaul, Iowa, Iowa State, Penn State, Princeton and St. Louis.
Indiana assistant coach Steve McClain was in Dallas to watch, among others, 2016 forward De'Ron Davis, according to sources. Davis is a five-star prospect from Colorado and is the third-ranked center in the 2016 class. The 6-foot-9 Davis already owns an offer from Indiana.
Indiana assistant Tim Buckley began his weekend at the EYBL tournament in Sacramento and was watched a number of talented prospects. Buckley was in Sacramento on Friday and Saturday and McClain and Crean were there on Sunday. Among the players IU watched were 2015 prospect Allonzo Trier, 2016 center Caleb Swanigan, 2016 guard Quentin Goodin, 2015 guard Bryant Crawford and 2016 guard Quentin Goodin.
Swanigan had the biggest weekend of those prospects, averaging 17.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He plays with the Spiece Indy Heat.
Other than watching 2016 center Barret Benson at the Jayhawk Invitational -- who received an Indiana offer on Monday -- the IU staff also watched 2017 stars Paul Scruggs (IU offer), Kris Wilkes (IU offer), Zach Gunn (IU offer) and Justin Roberts. Their Indy Hoosiers team won the division with an easy 66-35 win in the title game. Gunn had 25 points in that game and Scruggs had 29 points in a semifinal win.
Crean was in Dallas on Saturday, where 2016 forward Braxton Blackwell, who already has an IU offer, had a big weekend. Crean also watched T.J. Leaf, Eron Gordon, Kyle Guy and Thon Maker in Dallas, although sources tell AllHoosiers.com Indiana is not as involved in recruiting Gordon as they once were.
The 2016 class is loaded, and Indiana is involved with many of the top prospects.
