UPDATED with quotes from coach and links to two Scout.com reports on Stepaniak.
Hamilton (Ohio) Ross football coach Brian Butts said Sunday night that 6-4, 275-pound guard Simon Stepaniak called him Saturday afternoon and told him it was simply time to pull the trigger and commit to IU.
According to Butts, Stepaniak and his mother visited IU on Saturday. Stepaniak had visited IU several times with his father but this was the first time his mother had been to Bloomington.
"He just felt like it was the perfect fit and his mother was really impressed with Bloomington and the IU program, too,'' Butts said. "He told me, 'I really can't see myself playing anywhere else but Indiana.' He also said he was ready to get the recruiting process over and the thought of playing in front of packed stadiums in the Big Ten was exactly what he was looking for.''
Butts said that Indiana was the first Big Ten school that had offered Stepaniak back when the offer was made last summer. He said because of that, Stepaniak had formed a special bond with the IU coaching staff.
"I think he wanted to play closer to home and with the players they'll have potentially graduating I think he believes he'll have a chance to come in there and compete for playing time right away,'' Butts said.
Butts said that every coach who has stopped by to see him play recently have all said the same thing.
"They say that's he ready to go right now,'' Butts said. "He is very athletic, very skilled and quite fast for his size. He ran a 5-flat 40-yard dash at 298 pounds.''
