Travis named Big Ten player of week

No player this season had hit a home run at Penn State's Medlar Field before Indiana came to town last week. Sam Travis proceeded to hit home runs in each of the three games of the series. He was honored as the Big Ten's player of the week this week for the feat.

For the fourth week in a row and the eighth time in the last nine weeks, an Indiana baseball player has been honored as either the B!G player or pitcher of the week.

The latest is Sam Travis, the junior first baseman from Orland Park, Ill., who hit three home runs and collected six RBI last week in a three-game sweep of Penn State.

Not a single player, either for Penn State or an opposing team, had hit a home run this season out of Penn State's Medlar Field. Travis did it three games in a row.

Indiana clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season crown last weekend and carries a 19-2 conference record into Thursday's opening game of the final Big Ten series of the year. The Hoosiers will host Minnesota on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week, with all games at Bart Kaufman Field.

For Travis it was his sixth career Big Ten player of the week honor.

Travis hit a home run in each of IU's games over the weekend. It was his second such honor of the season. The other came on April 8.

Indiana, ranked No. 8 in the nation, travels to face No. 11 Louisville tonight in a non-conference game. Top Stories
